Rhodiola, a cold climate and high altitude loving adaptogenic plant, has been used for thousands of years by people living in cold, dark climates. Known for treating everything from altitude sickness to improving libido (research suggests that they do both), I love rhodiola for treating my Seasonal Affect Disorder depression and for anxiety. Rhodiola provides a pleasant boost of energy; something l often need during a SAD episode when I feel like I can’t get out of bed. It also seems to improve mood and lessens fatigue, regulates the production of stress hormones, and may improve cognitive function. I absolutely love it and after deciding to stop taking all prescriptions for depression and adhd nearly a decade ago, it’s become part of my mental health arsenal.

Rhodiola is endangered in some of its natural habitat due to over-harvesting and unscrupulous foraging. I use cultivated rhodiola grown by Alaskan farmers, which protects wild plant populations and supports small farmers.

Dosages for rhodiola vary. I suggest you start with one dropper, and increase as needed. It is a stimulant, so taking it late in the day will interfere with restful sleep. I recommend taking it directly under the tongue, where it absorbs quickly into the blood stream through mucus membranes, but you can also take in a cup of tea or with water.
