Kava (Piper methysticum), a bitter plant grown on the islands of Micronesia, Polynesia, and Hawaii, is sedative, anesthetic, and causes a mild euphoria. This psychoactive and medicinal plant is a mild relaxant and has shown effectiveness in treating anxiety, relieving stress and sleep issues. I find it pleasantly relaxing and like the mild floating feeling it produces. It is very bitter and astringent, and makes your mouth feel quite numb for a few minutes after taking. My kava tincture is double infused.

Kava is not addictive but heavy drinkers or those with liver issues should avoid. Kava can also exacerbate the effects of alcohol and should not be taken if operating a vehicle or other heavy machinery. Kava can have adverse reactions with anticonvulsants, anxiolytics, antipsychotics and other drugs metabolized by the liver, so consult your physician and do your research before consuming this or any other herb.

Dosages will vary for each person, but I suggest starting with one dropper full of tincture placed under the tongue or diluting the same amount in a glass of water. You may use 1-3 more droppers full if you’d like a stronger effect but be judicious and don’t over-dose yourself. This is a powerful plant.
