That association partially comes from its culinary use as a food preservative; its ability to dry meat and preserve fruits and vegetables, preventing bacteria from growing earned it a reputation as a purifying substance, a reputation that goes back thousands of years.

But even Whores and Heretics need a little powerful spiritual cleansing, so I started with the biblical story of Jezebel, daughter of a Phoenician priest-king Ethbaal, who married King Ahab, ruler of Israel. She convinced her new husband to introduce his peoples, worshippers of Yahweh, to the deities of her homeland, Baal and Asheroth. The citizens of her new home also took umbrage at the fact that she wore a fancy wig and tarted up her face with makeup, and thus the casual throwing around of the word whore in the Bible. And according to biblical lore, she also had the prophets of Yahweh “violently purged.” She’s eventually ritually tossed out of a window for her pains.

Even as a kid, I thought she seemed pretty punk rock. She wore a bright red wig, scandalized prudes with her outfits, wore eyeliner, and brought her nature deities with her. So this is my love note to all the Whores and Heretics who dare to be themselves.
