Riding the hedge is the witches journey to Other, to the Underworld, to the spirit realm; there your consciousness is altered and your soul or spirit takes flight. Traditionally, witches would either consume or rub hallucinogens into their skin and fly into other realms to seek healing, knowledge, divination, to seek help, or to commune with spirits.
