Devil's Share Initiatory Unguent
Devil's Share Initiatory Unguent
*Please note that I’ve using a different tin than the one shown in the photo, but they are equivalent in size. Tin is one ounce.
This ointment came about because I spent 13 consecutive months working through Gemma Gary’s Devil’s Dozen a few years ago, and I’m contemplating doing that again with some changes that reflect where my practice is now. Finding a churchyard in Texas to spend the night in was challenging and that’s the most you’ll ever hear from me about that particular rite. What happens in the churchyard stays in the churchyard. But all of the rites in GG’s book are built upon the first, where you disavow whatever Christian ties you may have, and calling upon the Devil, you dedicate yourself to Him. It’s a beautiful ritual and still one of my favorite workings ever. GG doesn’t call for an ointment in her ritual, but as I was thinking about changes I’d make for the next time I do it, I thought that I’d want to do it naked and that I’d want it to feel a little orgiastic and wild. So I collected some of my favorite plants pleasing to the Devil, along with a big fistful of Balm of Gilead to make an unguent. It’s a little sweet and sultry, and I used a bit of that precious oak moss I collected last spring along with other devilish herbs and roots. There’s nothing mind altering in here, except that these plants all belong to the Devil and smearing them all over your naked body while you dance and ululate and howl at the moon is going to make you feel like a wild beast while you make union with the Horned God.
