Once upon a time, before my son came along and before I had real responsibilities, I lived on an island off the coast of Maine. On this little island, I lived in a tiny rustic cabin deep in the woods, with no running water, no electricity. I sometimes went weeks without seeing another human and my only companions were the chatty orange tabby who I shacked up with, and the band of ‘song-dogs’ who crept close to the cabin to serenade us most nights. I’ve heard of people who find coyotes and their chorus of howls frightening, but I was glad to have the company.
For my homage to Coyote, her origins in the American southwest are the source from which my inspiration takes shape. Here she is woven into the fabric of creation and so deeply entwined with the spirit of the landscape that to me, they are inseparable. Elegant and elusive and yet somehow everywhere, she slinks through the underbrush after a rain storm, skirting the edges of wilderness and civilization; the evocative scents of piñon, sagebrush, juniper, and wood smoke collecting in her fur.
She is an outsider, a trickster, a teacher, and a survivor. She is a shapeshifter, inhabiting the world between worlds. She is liminality embodied.
Rituals and spells - Call on Coyote for healing, opening boundaries, lunar magick, recalling your wild spirit, to invite joy and play into your craft, entering liminal space, adapting to new situations, inviting trickster energy, nurturing your spirit, banishing negativity, surviving difficulty, shapeshifting, transformation, hidden knowledge. In my own practice, I invite Coyote in to honor her and to ask for her wisdom. I also associate Coyotes with Hekate because of her love of dogs, and think this candle would make a special offering on an altar for Her.
I chose soft grey lavender for Coyote, inspired by the purple flowers that grow on sagebrush across the American desert. I foraged the pinon, juniper, and sagebrush in New Mexico near Taos and Santa Fe with permission from landowners. I added common sage from my own garden, as well as other herbs, resins, and botanicals.
This purchase is for one pair of handmade beeswax candles. Candles measure 8 inches long and 1 inch wide at the base.
Do not leave candles burning unattended. Do not burn near children, pets, or flammable materials. I recommend burning on a plate style candle holder to catch wax drips or any bits of herbs that may burn. Keep wicks trimmed to 1/4 inch to promote even, efficient burning.
These candles are crafted for ritual use. I do not add any artificial or synthetic scents and feel that the natural smell of beeswax, herbs, and resins are best suited for magickal purposes.
